Tips For Using #Hashtags

This quote below was used by Chris Messina (aka “factoryjoe”) on August 23, 2007, was the first appearance of hashtags on Twitter. Just three days later, on August 26, the first use of the term “hash tag” appeared in a blog post by Stowe Boyd, titled “Hash Tags = Twitter Groupings”. Beginning July 2, 2009, Twitter began to hyperlink all hashtags in tweets to Twitter search results for the hashtagged word.

“how do you feel about using # (pound) for groups. As in #barcamp [msg]?”

In June of 2014, ‘hashtag’ was added to the lexicon of the Oxford English Dictionary.

Since June 12, 2013, Facebook has also supported clickable hashtags to help users follow trending discussions, or search what others are talking about on a topic. But the real question is, “Should they be part of your Facebook marketing strategy?”

A study by Social Bakers found that posts with 1 or 2 hashtags averaged 593 interactions. However, posts with 3 to 5 averaged 416 interactions, and posts with 6 to 10 averaged just 307 interactions. Posts with more than 10 hashtags averaged less than 200 interactions.

Does this mean too many hashtags are bad for business? Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your company’s social media presence.

  1. Use hashtags (1 or 2 only) when they make sense and when you use something relevant that people can filter on to find more relevant conversation.
  2. Use only  industry specific hashtags, or create your own if they will be relevant to your audience.
  3. If you are currently using hashtags in a campaign on Twitter or Instagram, start including them in your Facebook content.
  4. Use tools like Hashtagify.me to find other trending hashtags related to your specific tag.
  5. If you really want to make an impact with your social media marketing, sharing other people’s content is the way to do it.

There is no real consensus among experts. While most everyone recognizes the advertising potential of hashtags, there are still right ways and wrong ways to use them. Knowing precisely what you want to achieve will help determine how you use hashtags. This will ensure consistency in your brand message. Whatever you do, don’t just slap up a few hashtags that you think are keywords people might search for.
